The EU is an authoritarian regime, dominated by globalist elites who are rooted not in their own national identity, but rather in one which wishes to erode the very concept of the nation state. They would have nations move aside in favour of an overriding EU superpower which could control every aspect of our lives, largely via diktats issued by unelected EU Commissioners. We remember of course how Ireland along with other member states dared to vote against the Lisbon treaty. This democratic decision by the people of that country was unacceptable to the EU, so they had to vote again until they provided the ‘right’ answer. And so it was with Brexit. The EU and their self-appointed elite, which is largely made up of sneering metropolitan middle class liberals, were aghast that the ‘commoners’ would dare to rebel against their instructions. The establishment revolted because the people had first revolted against it. Instead of considering why 17.5 million people had rejected the continued surrender of UK sovereignty to an EU superpower, the elitist establishment decided they had to increase their noisy demonisation of anyone who did not subscribe to their world view – not realising it was this sneering attitude, the notion that a self-appointed elite will tell the ‘little people’ how to think, that drove so many people to vote for Brexit in the first place. As a Northern Ireland pro-Union and non affiliated Peer it is important to point out that in respect of my own part of the United Kingdom, Brexit has not been delivered. The EU, Ireland and those who collaborated with them against the interests of our own country succeeded in taking Northern Ireland hostage, trapped within the EU. The people of Northern Ireland are subject to EU law in almost every aspect of their lives and, egregiously, such foreign law – if there is any disagreement – prevails over UK law. We have seen with the Legacy Act (whatever one thinks of it) and the Illegal Migration Act how EU and Strasbourg law overrides the democratic will of the purportedly sovereign Parliament. These Acts, passed by those the people of the United Kingdom elected to make our laws, were struck down in the Northern Ireland courts – and are thus do not apply here – because judges found incompatibility with the Windsor Framework and the ECHR Convention. What this means is that European human rights and equality law now has precedence in Northern Ireland – and this on immigration not just in trade matters. In a short space of time, given the easy movement of people, softer NI immigration rules will leak into GB practice. This would not be tolerable in England, and nor should undemocratic EU colonial rule be accepted by any democrat in the sovereign United Kingdom. We can see now – consistent with the defeated Remain campaign’s agenda, all along – how Labour is using the Northern Ireland Protocol as a ratchet to bring the whole Kingdom back into the EU’s orbit and under its control. They are pitting Northern Ireland’s place in our precious Union against the will of the people to leave the European Union. A situation is being created whereby Labour is trying to create a binary choice: if you want Northern Ireland as a full part of the UK, then you must support full UK alignment with EU law. If you want Brexit, then you must accept NI being cut off and left as a European colony. This is an abominable tactic by a Government acting not in our national interest, but rather in their own pro-EU, globalist, ideological interest. It is also based on a false premise. Why should any part of the UK have to barter with the EU for our sovereignty and the right to live as free citizens, as a full and integral part of our own country? We must now reassert the primacy of UK democracy – for all parts of our Union – and ensure that it is the British Parliament, not any foreign entity, which makes laws for the whole country. The United Kingdom voted to leave the EU. That must not only be respected, but fully delivered for the entire country.
