In the last two days we have all seen how Left and Right have reversed their historic positions on the question of free speech. Yesterday Graham Linehan, the creator of the comedy classic “Father Ted” was arrested by five armed police when he landed at Heathrow on a flight from Arizona. The charge was transphobic tweets – ones that had been posted while he was in the United States. He was given bail with the condition that he was not allowed to use X. This remarkable example of police and judicial overreach and disregard for free speech drew widespread condemnation, much of it from the Right and centre-Right. The government has also condemned the arrest but supported the laws under which it happened – surely an unsustainable position. On the Left however there has been some support for Linehan’s arrest, most notably from the newly elected leader of the Green Party, Zack Polanski. It seems from this and other incidents that support for free speech is now definitely Right-coded while the advocacy of censorship and regulation of speech and expression is clearly Left-coded. All this will leave those over thirty scratching their heads. Historically, from John Stuart Mill onwards, robust support for free expression of all kinds has been associated with the Left of politics and particularly the liberal Left. The traditional Right was associated with the argument that speech could, and should be, curtailed in the interests of public order and the upholding of shared and foundational social values and norms. These were the battle lines of the great debates over free speech in the 1960s and 1970s, pitting people like Peter Tatchell against opponents like Mary Whitehouse.

Históricamente, desde John Stuart Mill en adelante, el robusto apoyo para la libre expresión de todo tipo se ha asociado con la izquierda de la política y particularmente la izquierda liberal.El derecho tradicional se asoció con el argumento de que el discurso podría, y debería, reducirse en interés del orden público y la defensa de valores y normas sociales compartidos y fundamentales.
