When James Roberts organised his first ever meet-up for gay men who do not subscribe to gender identity ideology (the belief that you can change sex), he wasn’t sure how many would turn up. It was January 2024, 15 months before the Supreme Court would rule that “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 – and, indeed, in the phrase “same-sex attraction” – meant sex based on biology, not a random gender with which one self-identifies. “If only six guys had shown up and we’d sat around a table in the pub simply chatting, that would have been fine,” says Roberts, 46, from London. “But in the end, around 40 turned up – all gay men who understood the issue and how it had an impact on gay men as well as women. “Gay men are only about 3 per cent of the population, so it always looks like there are only women talking about this. But I knew there were lots of gay men out there who believed in reality. It was just a question of reaching them.” Twenty months on from that first meeting in a London pub, his group, HumanGayMale (HGM), now runs monthly meet-ups and boasts more than 1,200 members globally. Around 70 per cent of its members are based in the UK – with regular events in major cities such as London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham – but there are also “clusters” in the United States, Canada and Australia.
