As of last month, HGM is also at the forefront of a possible legal first: a gay men’s group preparing to take action against a venue for excluding it over its gender-critical views. The Lion & Lobster pub, in Brighton, attributed its decision – made only hours before the meeting was due to take place – to its policy of barring “any groups promoting political ideologies or views”. But Roberts, the managing director of HGM, argues that they were discriminated against not for their political beliefs but for a belief in science, as well as their sexual orientation (as defined by the Equality Act 2010). He believes the pub was tipped off about their event by a group called Terf Watch Brighton. “I was shocked but not surprised when the pub cancelled. But if it’s going to happen anywhere, it’s going to be in Brighton,” he says. When Roberts could not get hold of the manager on the phone, he went round to the pub, hoping he could resolve the problem with her face-to-face. It was, after all, only weeks after barrister Allison Bailey had won her discrimination case against a veterinary practice that had excluded her from its client list for her gender-critical views.
