The idea for HumanGayMale was born. At its heart was the fact that men’s social circles – both gay and straight – are shrinking. As many as 15 per cent of men say they have no close friends at all. Add the “taboo” subject of gender ideology into the mix and gay men can find themselves very isolated indeed. “Gay men who even dare question the ‘LGBTQ+ orthodoxy’ can find themselves ostracised from their gay friendships circles and even barred from their local LGBT bar,” Roberts says. “One of my closest friends completely cut me out of his life after he found out I didn’t believe someone could change sex, or that a child could be born in the wrong body, or that trans-identifying females [women who identify as trans men] should be trying to entice gay men into bed.” It is this little-recognised and somewhat bizarre scenario that is having a detrimental effect on gay male spaces. “Obviously there’s not the same physical threat as men saying they’re women going into female spaces, but in terms of the invasion of male-only spaces [by women who say they’re men] in places such as saunas, support groups or even book clubs, it does have an impact,” says Roberts. “For instance, as far as we know, there are no gay male HIV support groups in London anymore. They are either LGBTQ+ groups or, if they say they are for gay men, they include anyone who ‘identifies as’ a gay man. “So even if there isn’t a ‘trans man’ [a biological female] there, that’s going to put off a certain number of gay men with HIV who want to talk about that only with other gay men. It’s still an invasion of gay male spaces.” The number of women claiming to be men (trans men) is thought to be on the rise, although the data is limited and questionable. According to the Office for National Statistics Census 2021, there were an estimated 48,000 trans-identifying females living in England and Wales, but these figures were stripped of their accredited status three years later when an investigation found that too many respondents had misunderstood the question. The Hollywood actor Elliot (formerly Ellen) Page is perhaps the most famous example. Lars Fellows, who appeared on the second season of the BBC gay dating show I Kissed a Boy, is another.
