“We do tend to be slightly older, but we have guys in their 20s and 30s as well,” he says. “For our first conference, there were a lot of younger guys there, but they were all wearing an orange lanyard, which meant they didn’t consent to their picture being taken. “They’re worried in case their work finds out, and there is more of a sense of caution. I’m self-employed, so I can talk about whatever I like. And the older you get, the more secure you are in your career, so it tends to be more older guys speaking out publicly. “The other angle we’ve talked about at our events is how gender identity ideology is affecting the next generation of gay men. Because young boys are now being told: ‘You’re in the wrong body’. That has been slightly tempered now with the puberty blocker ban and the Cass Review, but it’s still troubling.’ When contacted by The Telegraph, a spokesman for the Lion & Lobster pub said: “We have always welcomed and promoted diversity, [but] we are always reluctant to accept bookings from any groups promoting partisan political ideologies or views. When we accepted the booking, we were unaware that it was anything other than a social gathering.” The pub cited posts on X by HGM which stated that any activists infiltrating the meeting to cause trouble would be physically ejected and the police called. “We acted when we became aware of the adversarial/political nature of the event, with its associated threats of physical violence,” says the spokesman. Roberts responds: “The event was neither political nor adversarial. I had been made aware of a social media post that was calling for people to infiltrate our event to do things such as take photos of attendees. “I didn’t think any such activists would actually turn up, but I wanted them to know that we were aware they were talking about us and to discourage them from trying to come along and cause trouble. “If the pub had genuine concerns about this, they could’ve raised them with me. But they didn’t. They certainly didn’t cite any of this in their email, or in the conversation with the manager. They just cancelled the booking based on the say-so of the trans-rights activists.” For the upcoming legal action, Roberts has sought the advice of Peter Daly, a solicitor on a number of gender-critical cases, including that of Sex Matters’ founder Maya Forstater, who was investigated over a tweet. Remarkably, a crowdfunder Roberts launched for the group reached £2,500 in only three hours and nearly £10,000 in just over four days. He has paused the target until they determine which exact legal steps need to be taken. Meanwhile, he plans to pour more energy into HumanGayMale, setting it up as a non-profit business, appointing a board, holding more social events in more cities, and initiating research into the impact on gay men. “The front end of the ‘trans’ issue has been borne by women and lesbians in terms of the physical risks and women’s sports et cetera,” he says. “But it’s the responsibility of gay men – lesbians too – to unpick all this in the LGBTQ+ charities and workplace roles where they have influence.” Roberts appears ready for the inevitable backlash. “The public sees ‘trans’ as just another ‘gay’; people don’t get it,” he says. “I’ve had some interactions online where some people – even terfs – are blaming everything on gay men. “But the [transgender queer community] have tagged themselves on to us, and there is this misunderstanding that this ideology is something to do with homosexuality. It’s gay men who are going to feel the brunt of the backlash caused by this issue. The unpicking of all the crazy is going to take a very long time.”
